Laser Hair Removal 101
Check out these 20+ tips and helpful information you need to know before your laser hair removal appointment to ensure you get the best results possible!

What to Avoid Before Your Appointment
-
Avoid plucking and waxing: Refrain from plucking or waxing the treatment area for at least four weeks before your laser session. These methods remove the hair follicle, which is necessary for the laser to target effectively.
-
Stay out of the sun: Avoid direct sunlight or tanning beds for at least two weeks prior to your appointment. Sunburned or tanned skin is more prone to burns and complications during laser treatment.
-
Avoid skincare irritants: Skip harsh exfoliants, retinoids, and chemical peels for at least one week before your laser session. These products can increase skin sensitivity and the risk of adverse reactions.
-
Avoid specific pharmaceutical drugs: Inform your technician of any medications you're taking, especially photosensitizing drugs like isotretinoin, which can increase skin sensitivity to the laser.
-
If you have any of these contraindications, then laser hair removal is not for you: history of melanoma, raised moles, suspicious lesions, keloid scarring, active infections, open wounds, hives, herpetic lesions, cold sores, tattoos or permanent makeup in treatment area, recent use of Accutane, tetracycline, or St. John's Wort, autoimmune diseases like lupus, scleroderma, vitiligo, and pregnancy or breastfeeding.
What to Do Before Your Appointment
-
Shave the treatment area: Shave the treatment area the night before or the morning of your appointment.
-
Avoid shaving immediately before your session to prevent irritation.
-
Book your appointments around your period: Schedule your appointments during the follicular phase of your menstrual cycle, typically 1-2 weeks after your period starts, when skin sensitivity is lowest.
-
Wear comfortable clothes: Opt for loose-fitting clothing on the day of your appointment to avoid friction and irritation during and after treatment.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
-
Consultation and Skin Assessment: The session typically begins with a consultation where the technician assesses the individual's skin type, hair color, and medical history to determine the most suitable treatment plan.
-
Preparation and Treatment: After discussing expectations and addressing any concerns, the treatment area is prepped by shaving (if still needed) and applying a cooling gel. The laser device is then used to target the hair follicles, emitting pulses of light that are absorbed by the melanin in the hair, damaging the follicles to inhibit future growth.
-
Sensation and Duration: During the treatment, individuals may experience a mild discomfort often likened to a rubber band snapping against the skin. The duration of the appointment varies depending on the size of the treatment area, with smaller areas like the upper lip taking minutes, while larger areas like the legs may take up to an hour.
Aftercare Post-Laser Treatment
-
Exfoliate lightly after your laser session: After your laser session, gently exfoliate the treated area 48 hours later to help shed dead hair follicles and prevent ingrown hairs.
-
Hydrate your skin after laser treatment: Moisturize the treated area with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe any redness or irritation post-treatment.
-
Use hydrocortizone cream if you have any redness or itchiness.
-
Avoid sun exposure or any irritating chemical treatments, skin prescription applications, or anything that would irritate the skin.
